The empty space above the ThemeRiver visualization could be used
to show detail on demand information. When the user points on a
river a summary of the river could be given. Also a title could be
shown here.
In the magic lens data points are not shown in the current implementation.
This could be fixed.
Zooms on the x axis could be implemented. At the moment the time scale
is projected on the whole visualization. To examine certain periods of
time especially in bigger datasets would be very helpful. For this purpose
also horizontal scroll possibilities have to be implemented. Alternatively also
focus and context techniques could be considered.
Methods to highlight, re-order, merge and compare rivers could be
implemented.
As additional helper a window could be displayed with a histogram showing the distribution
of the values at the current point in time, where the mouse is pointing to.
An additional attribute could be used to apply shadings to the rivers.
For this topic several publications are available. An example would be:

For the rivers different shading modes could be used to allow a better
differentiation. For example the shading could get darker the nearer the
lower border.
